Cloud Platforms Vs Cloud Infrastructure
Clearly, enterprise IT has become very “cloudy.” The term cloud computing has grown from a little-known buzz-word into one of the hottest topics in IT today. This surge in interest has led to a great deal of debate as to what cloud computing is and how to apply it to the enterprise. However, in the course of these conversations, one critically important issue seems to be casually overlooked and underappreciated the difference between cloud infrastructures and cloud platforms, and the benefits of each to the enterprise.
Infrastructure-Oriented Clouds
Infrastructure-oriented approaches to cloud, including Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS) offerings, seek simply to provide access to virtualized computing resources in an on-demand manner. Typical of this approach is Amazon’s EC2, through which any user can request Linux or Windows virtual machine instances which are created on the fly and billed based on actual usage. The user of cloud infrastructure always knows how many virtual machines they have and what their individual IP addresses are and, in the case of Amazon’s EC2, the “sizes” of each instance. Platform-oriented approaches to cloud are distinguished by the higher level of abstraction they provide as well as the supporting services they make available to the applications that run on them. Google’s AppEngine is a good example of the Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS) approach and the distinction between infrastructure-and platform-oriented cloud types. The platform user is solely concerned about the applications they are running in the cloud. To migrate an application to the cloud they simply package it and then deploy it to the cloud. The deployment happens in a single step and the end-user doesn’t necessarily even know whether the application is being run on a single virtual machine or 10 at any given point in time. In addition, the application can take advantage of special services provided by the platform, such as authentication or data access.

There is little doubt that various forms of cloud computing will play an increasingly important role for organizations seeking a competitive advantage. Enterprises that employ cloud platforms “in either public or private cloud environment” will benefit from the increased scalability, security, and portability of their cloud-based applications, as well as the ability to manage third party applications. Technology For the Techno Impaired
I do not work in the technology sector but technology is a crucial tool of my every day business. As a writer, publisher, and speaker, staying on top of technology is as important as knowing how to write. I use technology for both communication and filing stories. Without the Internet, up-to-date software, and a competent technology advisor at my fingertips, I would be out of business in a hurry.
On 9-11, I truly found out what a miracle technology really was. Until I learned that United Flight #93 crashed into a field outside of Pittsburgh, when I heard the name “Pittsburgh,” I panicked and tried desperately to reach one of my dearest friends by telephone. The lines were busy, so I tried emailing her. The response was immediate and we emailed back and forth five or six times for comfort.
Until that moment, I took technology for granted. I thought of it as a necessary evil - just a tool for work. At that moment of 9-11, I began to marvel at it. Sharon and I started out as pen pals nearly 30 years earlier (we were very young) thanks to a pen pal page in a now defunct hockey magazine. Who could have imagined we would communicate instantaneously from 2,000 miles away, at a time when telephones, airlines, and post mail came to a halt?
Benjamin Franklin once said, “The best investment is in the tools of one’s own trade.”
I used to think that technology was way too complicated. I admit - I hated it. You couldn’t make me own a computer or a cell phone. I prided myself on being old school. I was afraid of viruses and all the things that came with being online. Eventually, I succumbed. If I wanted to move ahead in the publishing field, I had to have a computer and up-to-date software. I had to be online to file my stories electronically. No editor will retype hard copy material in today’s market.
Instead of laying out a whole lot of cash, I decided to lease my computer system. It made good business sense at the time because I could write off my payments. I didn’t go to one of those computer companies or shop online. I received personalized service. As associate referred me to a fellow who walked me through the process. I told him what I needed the computer to do and that I needed him to load as much memory and speed available. He found the equipment, put it together, came to my house and set it all up. It was the same with my Internet service provider. They even had a phone-back system if the wait for service was more than 20 minutes. For me, simplicity was everything. I only wanted to turn on the computer and have it work. I didn’t want to know how to program software or to be a technology geek.
Then it happened. Mr. W32 Sircam invaded my machine and shut down my programs. My anti-virus software (which I downloaded free from the Internet) had expired. I didn’t walk, but ran to the store for the Norton CD. My troubleshooter savior exorcised the demon from my computer. Since then, both he and Norton have been my best friends.
If you don’t hear anything else I’ve said, please hear this. Back up, back up, back up. If your information is important, back it up in more than one place - on a CD, USB key, email it to yourself. Put one of the backups in the safety deposit box, in the trunk of your car. This is extra insurance in case your business burns down, is robbed, or eaten by a virus. Add firewall protection to stop those who scan computers, hoping to launch a Trojan horse and access your files. Find an adware protector to keep adware from piling on in your system - which ultimately slows or crawls your system to a halt. It’s like car insurance. Antiviral software, adware protection, and a firewall are insurance to your intellectual property. It’s a cost of doing business.
There’s a lot of pressure to know everything there is to know about technology when you don’t really want to know. I’ve learned that it’s okay I don’t know everything. And that’s where outsourcing comes in. When it came time for me to launch a website, I developed a full and detailed business plan for what I wanted it to accomplish and then I found a web designer/host who spoke the same language - layman’s terms, not tech talk.
So while the technological world may seem abstract and scary, like it or not, in today’s business, it’s imperative that we continually upgrade and improve to stay at the same level or jump ahead of our competition.
But there is one truth you can know for sure. If I can get on the technological bandwagon, so can you.

Let’s talk about two items that I believe are essential to any office, but probably a home office more than any other. These are the modern all in one printer scanner fax machine and a good computer screen cleaner.
First of all, if you are looking to set up shop at home, you are probably not looking to spend much more than a couple thousand dollars (at most) in order to do so. Even though I already attended this particular plenary last semester for my Science and Technology 10 class, I was still able to pick up some things, and I was able to recall some of the things that I learned in the past. Fr. Nebres talked about the definition of technology where he stated that throughout the course of mankind’s existence, man has been immersed in various types of technology. No matter how primitive or advanced man was, he was still able to make life easier for his fellowmen through applications of his knowledge and the forging of this knowledge into certain tools. Fr. Nebres pointed out that even the first hammer made from wood and stone was considered technology. Even though I already know this, I wasn’t able to help but marvel upon how innovation and application of knowledge has embedded themselves in the nature of humans.
Throughout the centuries, man has been able to supply the demand of his people for an easier and more efficient life. This certain “supplies” paved the way for social development in different levels. Agriculture became the primary livelihood of man when man discovered the plow and sickle, which were made from iron. The economy, labor and education rose when the industrial revolution took its place in history. Then knowledge economy, which focused on talent development came into play. Technology has really affected the way we live our lives and I can say that we have truly been dependent on technology for our livelihoods.
Even with the large benefits that have stemmed from technology, Fr. Nebres pointed out that the newer generation of children have suffered in terms of socialization, etc. This was the direct result of depending too much on technology. We lose ourselves when we let technology govern our lives. We can see this through our everyday lives. Everyone has their cellphones on hand. Even the ones who need to buy food and clothing opt to get cellphones instead. This is just the beginning and we should not let technology govern us.
I think that even though we can benefit from technology greatly, we should keep our dependence on it in moderation. Doing so will help us preserve the “human” inside of us.

Computers are amazing business tools that most people are beginning to take for granted.
