Digital TV Or How I Came to Love Ones and Zeros
The entire United States of America is going thru a transition. On June 12, 2009, the transmission of analog television broadcasting will cease and digital will be turned on as the only form of broadcasting for many of us. This is not to be confused with HDTV broadcasting. Digital simply means that everything will be cleaner, due to the omission of analog “noise” from inconsistent signal strengths. The picture will be better than analog. There will be some low power and translator stations that will continue to broadcast analog for up to 5 years past the cutoff date.
Many have seen previous deadlines come and go and are taking an “I’ll believe it when I see it” attitude. One thing that is important to remember is that the current bandwidth used for broadcasting has been auctioned off. This means that the holders of the rights to that bandwidth are finally calling in their markers.
The only two solutions are to have Digital Compliant Televisions (or at least ones that will receive the signal from a Digital Cable Box or Digital Satellite receiver) or to purchase a DTV converter box. If you purchased a TV after October 2005, then there is a possibility that it is DTV compliant. The Digital Transition and Public Safety Act was passed in October of 2005. These DTV converter boxes will be available starting January 2, 2008 at a cost of between $50 and $70. The U.S. government will provide coupons worth $40 for homeowners needing a converter box. The limit will be two per household.
Another problem that could be facing some homeowners is that if they are relying on Off-Air Antennas that they may not get as many channels as they do now or maybe none at all. Digital requires a clean line of sight and currently analog broadcasts do not.
The major benefit with Digital is that because the signal is comprised of ones and zeros, any analog noise can be filtered completely out. This allows for the cleanest and sharpest picture available. Digital signals can achieve lossless data transmission. Analog signals always introduce noise. Digital can be sent for longer distances and can be reproduced exactly as the original.

Making Life Easier For Any Computer Technician The KVM Switch
I work as an IT specialist at a University, and I’ll have about 6 or 7 computers back at my tech shop on a weekly basis that needs to be repaired. From installing or replacing hard drives or other hardware, to cleaning out viruses and spyware, I always seem to have a computer to work on at my shop.
There are plenty of times where I have to work on multiple computers at once. Sometimes it could be for one of the previously mentioned issues, or the fact that I have new shipments of computers that have to be setup for users. No matter what the case, space is a premium, and it would not be logical to have a separate monitor, keyboard, and mouse setup for each computer I have to work on in our tech shop.
To help me fight through my weekly cache of computers that I need to repair or setup, without taking up several offices or cube spaces, a keyboard, video, and mouse (KVM) switch has proven to be a useful tool I couldn’t work without. Its functionality, along with its ease of use, has made daily computer repairs much quicker and efficient. A KVM switch allows you to connect one keyboard, one monitor, and one mouse to a little switch box, which then has ports to connect multiple computers. Older KVM switches only had a vga and PS2 connectors, but newer KVM switches come equipped with a vga and USB connections.
My current KVM switch supports up to 8 computers. The computer that sits at the first slot is my ghost server, which I use to push out ghost images or create backup images. Slots 2 through 8 are free to be hooked up to any computer that needs to be repaired, cleaned, or setup. With this current setup, I can now house all of the computers on a 4 layer shelving system, which helps save on space as each shelf can hold 3 computers.
For me, the best setup I found was to sit the KVM switch on the top shelf, and run the cables down to all of the shelves below it. This allows for easy access to the proper cables as well as quick hook ups. I am constantly rotating computers in and out of my shop, so easy access to the computers and the cables is a must.
The KVM allows me to perform multiple repair or cleaning projects, as I can quickly switch between 8 different computers as I need to. As an example, I can run windows updates on one computer, then switch over to a second computer to check for spyware and viruses, while the scans are running I can switch over to a third computer to create a backup image, and finally switch over to the first computer to connect the ghost server to the client that wishes to create a backup image. I can perform all of those tasks within minute, all while using the same monitor, keyboard, and mouse, all at the same desk.
For computer technicians that find themselves working on multiple computers through the week, and even more importantly, need to work on multiple computers at the same time, a KVM switch is an important and useful tool. Smaller shops can get KVM switches that have only 2 or 4 computer connections, where as bigger shops can get KVM switches that allow 8 or 16 computer connections. Each computer technician will have different needs, but no matter what your workload looks like, a KVM switch will help streamline your work queue as well as make your life a little easier. And as computer technicians, anything that makes things easier is always welcomed!

PC Versus Mac Debate
The PC versus Mac debate is raging in my house. We have both available for use so hopefully the opinions presented by those around me are at least somewhat based on actual experiences. So why are their opinions so polarized?
I have an aging iMac desktop machine at home that works just fine for all the things that I need to do. Which includes the usual email and web browsing but also serves well for video editing and photo management. At work I use an Intel based PC that is just amazing for all the applications that I need to run there, usually 5 to 7 at any one time. I couldn’t ask for a more capable machine. It has lots of RAM and a nice big 21-inch LCD screen. I love it.
My teenaged son on the other hand wouldn’t touch a pc unless a gun was pointed to his head. He and his friends seem to think that the pc or anything Microsoft is something to be avoided like the plague. Although they do seem to go mute when I point out that the Xbox they are playing is a Microsoft product. Selective preferences seem to be okay for them when it suits their entertainment needs.
For me having capable computing power when and where I need it is much more important than the relative cool appeal of whatever type of machine I have available. I couldn’t give a rats behind whether or not the machine has any kind of sex appeal. As long as I can get it to do what I want ask of it. If I could make an old Commodore 64 do what I needed then that would be okay with me. I suppose I just don’t look at my computer as any sort of status symbol.
I look at computers as appliances, just a means to an end. I don’t expect my toaster to add anything to my social status beyond making toast when I put the bread in. And it’s no different when it comes to computers. They are there to do our bidding. Nothing more. If a Mac is better at running graphics software then that is the platform to use. And if a PC is better suited when it comes to business applications then that is great too. It’s just an appliance! If it does what you are asking then what more do you need? My car is an aging Toyota Camry (also an embarrassment to my son) that will easily exceed all posted speed limits so why would I need something faster? To me the car is just a necessary transportation appliance. Nothing more.
Why then do so many have such strong opinions on the PC vs Mac systems? Is it just marketing? Or maybe the wanting to belong to a community of like minded individuals. I don’t think you can ever underestimate the power of the herd mentality. If all your friends think that the Mac (or PC) is the only way to go then it becomes very hard to buck the flow and go your own way. You run the risk of having to justify your choice to your peers with the possibility of great ridicule. As if it really matters in the end what type of processor does the work for you.
What I have noticed however as a distinguishing point is the relative lifespan of the two platforms. As I mentioned I have an aging Mac at home that still works as well as the day I brought it home. My PC friends on the other hand seem to be in a constant need of an upgrade. Over time their pc’s just get slower and slower. This is despite all there efforts using firewalls and virus scanners. Things that are unnecessary with a Mac of course. At least for now while the Mac has only about a 5% market share that leaves little incentive to write those viruses for so few. Does that really make the PC an inferior platform for our needs?
Not at all. The PC is still the choice of most of the worlds users of the desktop computer. The huge array of software available for the PC is just one of the many reasons why it is king. There are a huge number of companies providing both hardware and software that use the Windows operating system. Resulting in a highly competitive marketplace that has because of this competition kept the prices at astonishingly low prices. You can now buy a good laptop complete with Windows and other companion software for under $500.00! And desktop computers can be had even cheaper. Just try to get a Mac for anything less than double that.
The cool appeal certainly is a huge factor. Macs have that in spades. Even with the higher price of entry they have a rabid fan base. Mac users are so dedicated to their machines almost to the point of obsession. They believe this strongly for reasons that could only be rooted in loyalty to Apple’s vision of a unique alternative to the Microsoft near monopoly. There will always be a segment of the population that feels the need to rebel against a successful corporation. I know people that refuse to drink a Starbucks coffee and not that they will likely admit it but I suspect it is just the fact they perceive the company to be just too corporate. Too successful. Microsoft is all of that. A large very successful corporation, therefore they must be hated.
It’s all good of course. It makes for a healthier marketplace to have some competition for the large dominant corporations. There is always room for more choice available to the consumer.

Understand the Price of Data Conversion Before Attempting it on Your Own
The process of data conversion can seem simple enough if you think about in the literal sense, such as converting Meta tag files into HTML code. However, the execution can be tedious and time consuming making it impractical for a small business owner to spend a vast amount of time on a small part of their online business when they have more pressing matters. This is why sometimes it is helpful to hire assistance from properly trained virtual assistants when it comes time for data conversion tasks. With the aid of a trained professional you can free up your schedule to take care of matters that only you have the expertise or authority to complete.
Additionally, there are some types of data conversion that require research and expertise that you may not have. Thus, not only do you have to spend time not only performing the data conversion if you choose to attempt the task yourself, you first have to invest a reasonable amount of time studying how to complete the conversion in the first place. A trained assistant on the other hand is familiar with many tasks since they complete them on a daily basis which is why it may only take them a fraction of the time it would take you to complete the same task.
Finally, the last reason you may want to consider seeking aid with a data conversion is because data that is improperly converted can cost your business. Even if you are not dealing with data related to costs data is the backbone of information and improper information can cause you to make the wrong decision that can impact your profits or future return on your investment. Thus, if you are not comfortable with a data conversion it is always best to spend some money to save more money in the long run before you find out what the implications could be.

Choosing the Right Technology Partner
Choice…
Choosing the right technology partner is perhaps the most important part of any IT strategy or initiative. There are many factors that weigh heavily in this decision, but maybe the most important factor is choosing a partner that can provide all the services you need to complete the project. Many companies try to save money by breaking projects into components and finding the cheapest provider for each. While this may seem like a good idea at the onset, it can lead to inconsistencies and can prove to be an integration nightmare. For example, if one company designs your application and another develops your documentation and training, the knowledge and expertise gained gained by the first company in the development process now has to be transferred to or re-learned by the second company.
This process usually translates to endless emails and phone calls to the subject matter experts and developers. This same problem can present itself in many other situations as well. Let’s say you farm out graphic design work to the cheapest bidder and you hire another firm to design your marketing collaterals. Inevitably, your marketing partner will need different versions of logos or higher resolutions to develop certain marketing items, etc. This will cause you to either spend your time coordinating the efforts between the two, or spend more money having the designers re-develop the imagery according to the new specifications. As you can see, this issue can show up almost anywhere, wearing almost any costume. This problem becomes much more apparent when you have a large project that will include development, documentation, training and marketing efforts.
What to look for…
By searching out providers that offer multiple services that compliment each other, you may be able to save yourself and your organization time and money. These companies may be a little harder to find and may not be as cheap as the others, but can save you money in the long run. In looking for companies that offer “bundled” services, try to group your project components logically. Graphic design, media and marketing fit together very well, as do application and database design and development. By contracting “bundled services” you can easily shave a hundred or more hours off a project.
Recommendations…
Look for a partner whose services include:
- Website Design & Development
- Application Design & Development
- Graphic Design
- Branding (For print and screen)
- Online Marketing / SEO
- Video for TV / DVD / Web
- Training and Documentation
- IT Staffing

Everything You Ever Wanted to Know About DIN Rail Power Supplies But Were Afraid to Ask
A DIN rail, also known as a ‘top-hat’ rail, is a standardised, 35mm wide metal rail with a hat-shaped cross section. It is widely used for mounting circuit breakers and industrial control equipment inside equipment racks.
In addition to the 35mm size rail there are other, less widely used types, including the 15mm, 7.5mm and the G-type rail. All DIN rails should carry British Safety standard certification, as with any electrical goods.
DIN rails and mounting hardware are used on computer boards. DIN is an acronym for Deutsche Institute fuer Normung, a German standardization body and member of the International Standards Organization (ISO). DIN rails and mounting hardware are standard mounting equipment for a variety of electronic components, including terminal blocks to connect wiring. DIN rails and mounting hardware are internationally approved, industry standard hardware for a vast array of components made by computer manufacturers. DIN rail terminal blocks also offer grounding and disconnecting capability and provide self-locking clamps to ensure a tight connection.
DIN rails most common applications are in general industrial applications including factory automation, electro-mechanical industry, data communications, IT, power distribution boxes, control panels, building automation and household appliance control. Their versatility in being able to deliver a power supply to multiple applications means that DIN rails are one of the most commonly used delivery systems.
When used to mount circuit breakers, DIN rail mounting means that the circuit breaker is much more easily accessible than if it were mounted using more traditional methods.
DIN rail power supplies are power supplies that are mounted onto the rail to allow external units to be connected to a power source. The best quality DIN rail power supplies should have the following features:
? Universal AC input
? Short circuit, over load, over voltage protections
? Cooling by free air convection
? Can be installed on DIN rail TS-35/7.5 or 15
? NEC class 2 / LPS compliant
? Built in DC OK active signal
? LED indicator for power on
? No load power consumption <0.75W
? 100% full load burn-in test
? Fixed output voltage
By incorporating all of these into a power supply unit, the power delivery is safe and assured. The low power consumption makes these units an energy-efficient method of power delivery, keeping running costs down.
Larger units are available for three-phase power supply requirements, although these are mainly used in commercial applications rather than domestic ones. The inclusion of a UPS system will ensure that the power supply is uninterrupted, even in the event of a general power cut.
Modern DIN rail power supplies are compact, lightweight and reasonably priced. If you have a number of electrical appliances that require a continuous power supply, installing a DIN rail system saves space and improves efficiency by keeping your power supplies wall-mounted and away from desk space. Including a circuit breaker in the design maximises safety and means that common faults can be dealt with quickly and easily. DIN rails should be installed by a professional electrician, who will be able to advise you on the best form of DIN rail power supply system to mount onto your rail.
Dean Curtis shared the useful information on Din Rail Power Supplies. Check the information stored here for more details on modern Din Rail Power Supplies.

Speed Up Your Computer Performance Tips
Are your computers getting slower and slower each time you use it? Do you still acquire the same computer performance even if it is more than 5 to 10 years old already? Well, if your problem is a slow computer performance I have some tips you might need to speed up the process. These tips will help improve your computer’s performance.
First, if your computer is too old I suggest that you burn your files that are less important. Place it on CD or DVD to give more hard disk and memory space. This will help lessen the files that your computer will need to read on. Like on the start up or when running some applications that will need to read the whole files in your computer. It slows the process due to the fact that your PC specs don’t have the capabilities of the new computers being sold in the market right now.
You can also upgrade your computer components to get better performance. However, if you don’t have money, it is not advisable that you buy CD, DVD or any computer components. Don’t worry because there are still other ways to accelerate the performance of your computer.
Some files are still in your computer even if you already uninstall the programs you installed before. Most of us didn’t know that, right? These files are left over by programs we used before. Now, these files are traceable using some free program out there. It’s not easy to trace them or sometimes we are not sure what files to delete so we end up having no choice but not to delete it. We don’t want to remove something we didn’t know because sometimes we are afraid that we might encounter troubles if we will be deleting these files. It might cause us some problems like the computer will not work properly because the files we deleted actually has a major part in our OS but we assume that it has no use. It happened to me before. So I suggest that you must try a Google search first before deleting the files.
Another way is by using programs like CCleaner. It is a tool you can use to remove unused files in your system. This tool allows your windows to run fast and free some space in your hard drive. It has the ability to clean your internet activities as well.
Next is to lessen the startup program. Remove unnecessary programs on startup so it won’t affect the speed of your computer while opening. Those startup programs make your computer slow while opening because your computer memory has to load those startup programs first. Your memory needs more time to do this that’s why it makes your computer slow. If your memory is not that high, I suggest doing this process to make the loading faster. Well, here is the way how you can lessen your startup programs. Click “start” then go to “run” or on the “search box” of your laptop, type “msconfig”. After that, you will see a pop-up window with lots of choices. Choose the “Startup” tab then uncheck the programs you don’t need to load when your computer starts.
Last thing I know is disk defragmenter. Disk Defragmenter is another computer program designed to increase access speed. Also known as defragmenting, this is the process of rearranging files stored on a disk to occupy contiguous storage locations. The objective of this process is to optimize the time it takes to read and write files to/from the disk. It can be done by minimizing head travel time while maximizing the transfer rate. Disk Defragmenter can also improve the loading time in system startup for computers supported by Windows XP.

How to Get the Maximum Speed of Your PC Or Laptop
A PC or a laptop may take ages to respond to any command you feed into it. This is called performance. Your PC or laptop may take too long to load the information you need urgently. Sometimes it will crush when performing light tasks. You might have realized that the speed of your PC or lap top keeps on going down. Unlike when it was new when its speed was fastest, now it seems to work in slow motion. This is annoying and probably you are asking yourself what the problem is. Well look no further, the problem is with the registry.
Registry refers to the database where all the information pertaining to the PC or laptop is stored. Whenever new installations are made to the PC or laptop, a new key comes along. This key is added to the many other keys in the registry. The PC or laptop will require this key so that it can load, recognize and run the new software that you have installed. Therefore, every time the PC or laptop is started the registry settings have to be loaded for all the programs that is has. Registry issues come in here. Due to the many installations made which are uninstalled now and then, the settings in the PC registry are altered. This brings about a reduction in the speed of your PC or laptop. You need the best registry cleaner to clean it up.
The best registry cleaner will remove any registry keys that have been left because of any program that is uninstalled. Consequently, these keys accumulate to form clutter. This clutter is not valid. It is corrupted and cannot be recognized by the registry. There is in existence the best registry cleaner software in the market today. For you to increase the speed of your PC or laptop is advisable to consider them. The best among the software is called registry easy. It is known to do a good job for your PC or laptop.
The problems with the PC or laptop are spread all over the computer system. First there is need to identify these locations. Registry easy comes with a free scanner that scans for these invalid entries. The scanner will identify the exact location of the entries and the danger they may cause your PC. This award-winning cleaner has an algorithm. The algorithm has a detector of high performance. It will detect the invalid entries quickly and the errors that may exist in your PC. All the errors and invalid entries are presented in the form of a list. From here, you can choose or select the lists that you want to clean up. Registry easy the best registry will automatically do the clean up. Your PC does not have to be a bother anymore. Again, you do not have to buy a new PC or laptop. Use registry easy the best registry cleaner and regain the speed that you require.

How to Fix Slow Computers
Every last bit of has its flaws and the computer is no exemption, there are troubles that everyone will come across. The pace of the computer decelerates. From easy tasks like typing or browsing the net, the work becomes a drudge. Minutes seems to drag on as the program loads up. Hints are here to help you restore that slow computer:
Ending all application programs and rebooting your computer is the greatest and smoothest way to fix a slow computer. More often than not, this is one of the main causes of the trouble, people would run their programs or applications almost all day and that usually tend to be the main reason.
Check Over if you have any newly installed applications in your computer. The hard drive and the computer memory might be the key to finding out the main problem, if these new applications are occluding up the memory then common sense would tell that this is the trouble. Take note that these files are too big for the memory or the hard drive to manage. Take Out these files from the memory or from its folders to lighten up the pace of your computer. Observe the speed of your computer after you’ve done erasing the software and rebooting your computer.
Scanners, printers, and the like that are physically wired to the computer could be one of those reasons. The standard way to check out if this is the cause is to remove the hardware off the computer and reboot the system.
A virus infection is one of the leading reasons of this problem. These viruses including pop-ups are illegitimate programs that suck the life out of the computer rendering it to almost into nada. A virus scan and a pop-up blocker would be the better medicine for this problem.
